Virtue of Virtues
by Yogi Bhajan

We are very fortunate that we are progressing in enhancement of our spiritual strength. But, what is that virtue which a human can attain to or do which can give much happiness from God? If one becomes a saint by the process of elevated consciousness, it is a virtue...

Kundalini Yoga in the News

Y.O.G.A. for Youth Celebrates Its 10th Anniversary This Year!
Though work with troubled teens began with Krishna Kaur before 1998, Y.O.G.A. for Youth was officially incorporated in December of that year as a 502(c) 3 tax-exempt organization. Since then, the work has spread throughout this country and into Mexico as well. Now, there are numerous organizations doing good work with youth.

Kundalini Yoga featured in Yoga Journal Italy!
The article written by Sangeet Kaur from Milan with yoga asanas modeled by Jai Kaur form Roma features a Kriya from the book “Yoga for Youth and Joy.” The Kriya assists one in overcoming fear and stress. The article speaks about how people generally avoid stress and so when it appears in their life they freak out. Instead, the Sangeet Kaur suggests, acknowledge that stress is a part of life and learn how to manage it when it appears on the scene. The technology of Kundalini Yoga as taught by Yogi Bhajan can assist us in accepting stress as a part of life and the tools to manage it effectively.

Golden Bridge in Yoga Journal
At Golden Bridge in Hollywood, California, you can practice asanas—Kundalini or flow, your choice—and meditate in one of five classrooms tucked inside the enormous brick-and-wood atrium. You can also belly dance, hula hoop, or practice the martial art Budokon; receive a massage, foot reflexology, acupuncture, or Ayurvedic treatment at the Amrit Davaa Wellness Center; have your stars read by the resident astrologer; ponder the modernist paintings in the upstairs art gallery; or drink custom healing elixirs at Ron Teeguarden’s Dragon Herbs counter.

International Association of Black Yoga Teachers
The International Association of Black Yoga Teachers (IABYT) is an organization dedicated to increasing the presence of yoga in the inner city. Our mandate is to utilize the art and science of yoga to better serve the African Diaspora and other communities around the world. The association provides an opportunity for black Yoga Teachers to come together in support of each other’s ability to nurture, uplift and spread meaningful teaching throughout our communities.

Freedom and Equality with a Liberal Dash of LOVE

Shuniaa: Transforming Lives

Shuniaa, a newly launched yoga center located in Nevada City, Northern California, USA, sees itself as more than a yoga center. Dev Dharam Singh Khalsa, the co-owner of Shuniaa with his wife, Sat Atma Kaur Khalsa, shares a personal story from which the intention of Shuniaa was spawned, “The root and focal point for Shuniaa is based on transforming lives. Before I began a yoga practice many years ago, the stress of my business and life escalated to the degree that I experienced severe discomfort through the form of panic attacks. Discovering Kundalini Yoga and Meditation changed my life so powerfully, that it is the true inspiration behind the creation of Shuniaa; a sacred space offered to serve people in their life transformation.”

How they have flourished in these financially challenging times
Dev Dharam explains, “It is important to keep awareness of what is happening around you but not allow the fear factor of the current market and media dominate your state of consciousness and actions. What you focus on manifests so it is important to be clear and one pointed with your focus to manifest something that is special to you...

Message from the 3HO Chief Executive Officer

Sat Nam,

When Liv Kaur, our Marketing and Communications Manager, told me the theme of this month’s eNewsletter is "Freedom and Equality with a Liberal Dash of Love" I was intimidated. I created a sense of pressure on myself to be brilliant and wondered how I was going to accomplish that. I thought to myself, "How can I write something as great as a speech given by Martin Luther King, Jr., or the Dalai Lama and delivered with the finesse of Barack Obama?" After thinking about this for a while, I decided that I probably couldn’t accomplish this as well as I would want to and opted to do what I know I can do, which is to just be me.

So when thinking about these subjects, I was able to better relate to them singularly rather than tying them all together as one. And here is how I relate to each one:

Freedom: we have some genuine freedom of choice and therefore some effective control over our destinies. We have the freedom to choose, what to do and what to be.

Equality: we are all one no matter what size, shape, color, gender, age, beliefs, lifestyle, chosen spiritual path or God. Yogi Bhajan captured the essence of equality very well with one of his favorite sayings, "If you can’t see God in all, you can’t see God at all."

Dash of love: I have a vision of rapidly sledding down a snow-covered hill with rosy red cheeks and a big smile on my face. I am pretty sure that this is due to it being winter, Christmas time being near and the song "Jingle Bells" being so conveniently available in my subconscious: "Dashing through the snow, in a one-horse open sleigh. Over the fields we go, laughing all the way, ha, ha, ha." Although dashing through the snow is something I love to do, I think love expands beyond sledding. The subject of love is actually pretty simple, and just for fun, I invite you to watch this musical video on love.

Blessings to you, your friends and family throughout this holiday season and may you always be blessed with all that your heart desires.

With Love,
Bhajan Kaur

The Equality Evolution of the EU Yoga Festival

Healing By Tarn Taran Kaur Khalsa, Española, NM, USA
Kundalini Yoga spread rapidly throughout most western European countries during the early seventies. Yogi Bhajan visited and nurtured each local ashram regularly; however, he had a larger vision. We need to bring all the students together for Kundalini Yoga and Tantra, he told us repeatedly. We need to cultivate a spiritual nation that bridges the national borders and local fiefdoms. And so a new manifestation was created and named by Yogi Bhajan: Yoga Festival.

In the mid-seventies it was extremely rare that such a diverse group of Europeans would gather for a week-long yoga event. And even with all the preparation and inspiration we faced grumbling and a lot of education challenges...

Comunicación No Violenta…el lenguaje de la compasión y la libertad

By Alexandra Molina / Sat Siri Kaur, Cuenca, Ecuador

A Woman’s Mind

Healingby Yogi Bhajan
The Lover thinks of how to please her Beloved,
And know Him deep inside of her.

What does the flirtatious one know of this?

Akal Moorat and the Freedom to BE

By Satmitar Kaur Khalsa, Española, NM, USA
We chant it every morning during our Aquarian Sadhana and Sikh Banis.

Do we know what it means?

Akal Moorat—is not just words, it is the light of God expressed through sound and describes our True nature. When Guru Nanak emerged out of the river after three days, he uttered this frequency—Akal Moorat. Akal means deathless, timeless, infinite. Moorat means form, shape.

Human Rights. . . A Universal Issue

By Liv Kaur, Española, NM, USA
Recently, I received a post from a friend asking me to "Fight for marriage equality!" As I followed the link in the e-mail to sign the petition, I got to thinking that the issue at hand was deeper than Gay/Lesbian/Bisexual/Transgendered rights. In fact it is deeper than Women’s rights or Children’s rights or African American rights or Native American rights. The core issue and the energy at hand is about Human Rights.

What does “human rights” mean? 3HO is an NGO of the United Nations; and on a lark I decided see how the United Nations defines Human rights. The United Nations defines Human Rights through the Universal Declaration of Human Rights "Among its 30 articles are definitions of civil and political rights (including the rights to life, liberty, and a fair trial) as well as definitions of economic, social, and cultural rights (including the right to social security and to participation in the cultural life of one's community), all of which are owed by UN member states to those under their jurisdiction. It has acquired more juridical status than originally intended and has been widely used, even by national courts, as a means of judging compliance with member states' human-rights obligations." (summary by Britannica Concise encyclopedia)

As the Global Community of 3HO, we are well familiar with Yogi Bhajan’s famous, "Happiness if your birthright." How does our birthright translate into freedom and equality for all?

Eco-3HO For the Holidays

Healing Reuse It!
The ornament to the right is recycled; out of holiday cards! So if you are looking for crafts ideas to entertain the kids (or yourself), look no further than the nearest trash can. Get your creativity juices flowing and you can come up with many ideas to make treasures out of trash. Click on the image to find out more

Enjoy the holidays with these eco-friendly and energy-smart tips from Positively Green

(1)

use only rechargeable batteries.

(2)

find creative ways to cut down/reuse wrapping paper to reduce paper waste.

(3)

use long-lasting soy and beeswax candles.

(4)

decorate with natural items, e.g., stones, leaves and branches.

(5)

arrange carpools and rideshares when hosting or attending holiday parties and events

(6)

if expecting a house full of guests, lower your thermostat.

(7)

use essential oils and fresh-baked goods to fill the house with wonderful holiday aromas.

(8)

don’t overcook and end up wasting good food; send leftovers home with guests in glass jars instead of plastic wrap.

(9)

emphasize togetherness and simple pleasures like games, cooking and music.

(10)

use solar or LED lights, and only use them for 4 – 6 hours per night.

Bonus tips: (1) make your own holiday wreath, (2) buy a live tree to replant later or (3) after the holidays, turn your cut tree into mulch you can use or take to a recycler that will convert it into mulch for public use.

Healing the Body, Mind and Soul

The Journey of the Soul – Karma, Dharma, Reincarnation

Karma is the law of cause and effect applied to mental, moral, and physical actions. Ego attaches to and identifies us with objects, feelings, and thoughts. These attachments create a bias toward certain lines of action. Instead of acting, we react. Karmas are the conditions required in order to balance or complete these tendencies.

Dharma is the path of life above the wheel of karma, aligned with our soul and destiny, where all our actions are towards the Infinite. It is action without reaction, or karma.

Reincarnation is the cycle of birth and death spurred on by karma. Our thoughts and actions create cause which must be completed, thus creating our next incarnation.

Liberation is release from the cycle of birth and death. When our actions no longer create karma, when we live in dharma, rather than karma, we are said to be liberated.

Sacred Eats

Breaking bread together is a blessed and sacred act. To honor that consciousness, the 3HO team in Española is taking turns cooking up a recipe to share with the rest of the team. Yum! If you have created a wonderful vegetarian dish and would like to see it featured in our eNewsletter or on our website please send it to Livk@3HO.org. Be sure to include whom the credit goes to!

Seed Pate

Healing

Ingredients:
1 ½ cups raw unsalted sunflower seeds
(soaked in purified water 2 – 6 hours)
1 – 2 cups water
1 Tbsp Braggs or Nama Shoyu
2 lemons, juice of
1 clove garlic
½ tsp dried dill or a few sprigs of fresh dill
½ tsp dried tarragon
½ tsp cumin powder or
Dash of cayenne (optional)
¼ cup finely diced red onion (optional)
¼ cup finely diced cucumber or celery (optional)
Spiralized or shredded raw beets and carrots (optional garnish)

Preparing instructions:
Soak the seeds for two hours minimum. Throw out the soak water. Then puree the seeds in a food processor. Add 1 cup of water, 1 Tbsp of Nama Shoyu or Braggs, lemon juice and a garlic clove and blend to desired consistency. Do not add too much water at first or else it may be too thin and you will need to add more seeds. Add more liquid to desired consistency. You want the consistency to be of a thick spread similar to humus. Then add seasonings; dill, tarragon, or cumin to taste preferences and cayenne, if desired. I also like to add finely chopped red onion and cucumber to give the pate more texture. Serve on a bed of lettuce or in a romaine lettuce leaf with garnish as desired. Will keep in the refrigerator for 5 days.

Seed or Nut Cheese

Healing

Ingredients:
1 cup water
1 cup of sunflower seeds, pumpkins seeds,
raw cashews or peeled almonds

Seasoning ideas: ½ tsp dried dill or a few sprigs of fresh dill, sun-dried tomatoes, garlic, green onion or chives, miso, cumin, diced red or white onion, black pepper, diced celery, cayenne or jalapeño, Nama Shoyu or Celtic sea salt.

Preparing instructions:
Puree the nuts in a blender or food processor with one cup of water. Drain in cheesecloth, sprouting or nut milk bag 12 – 24 hours depending on how fermented you want your cheese. Mix in desired seasonings and serve with flax crackers or celery sticks or sprinkle on salad. Store in fridge.

“The Cook’s Tips”
You can even make cheese without draining. Soak nuts or seeds. Then blend them with a small amount of water, lemon juice, salt, garlic and cumin. Transfer to a bowl and let sit on the counter covered with a cloth napkin or tea towel for 12 hours or more to ferment. Then add seasoning and serve.

Kundalini Yoga

Sat Kriya

HealingSat Kriya is essential to the practice of Kundalini Yoga. It is one of the few exercises that is a complete action in itself. It is a kriya: an action or series of actions that completes a process and has a predictable outcome. Most kriyas consist of a series that synergize. Sat Kriya can stand alone like a precious gem. Any serious student should master this kriya. A beginning student should start with 3 minutes every day. The time can be built up from that base.
